Paleoanthropologist Lee Berger from the University of the Witwatersrand in Johannesburg and colleagues announced the discovery of the new species. Three H. naledi teeth were analyzed using the radioactive decay technique of uranium, which revealed a maximum age of 335,000 years. The research results were published in eLife, Genomics and Evolutionary Biology on May 9, 2017. The fact that H. sapiens evolved only 200,000 years ago and that Homo naledi lived between 236,000 and 335,000 years ago implies that a species with some surprisingly primitive characteristics survived in the recent past and probably coexisted with modern humans as they emerged in Africa.
