The archaeological record contains no clear evidence of who our ancestors were or how humans evolved from hominins to modern humans. Trevor Cousins and his team from the University of Cambridge presented a new method of modeling genomic data. The goal was to trace the evolution of modern humans. Researchers utilized human DNA data from the 1000 Genomes Project and the Human Genome Diversity Project. They discovered new genetic data of our ancestors.
The team found two main ancestral groups that split approximately 1.5 million years ago. They designated the groups as Population A and B. Their genetic analysis suggests that 80% of the genome of all present-day humans originates from Population A. The remaining 20% comes from an unknown population, referred to as Population B. Cousins says, “the genes that we inherited from our ancestors, Population B, are related to brain function and neural processing. Therefore, it played a critical role in human evolution.
Researchers concluded that, around 300,000 years ago, Population A, which eventually gave rise to humans, had “deep structure.” Meaning that it was formed from “two or more genetically distinct populations that mixed.” John Hawks at the University of Wisconsin-Madison commented as follows. “The pattern in the model is a deep African structure that is shared by everyone living today. It is not a ‘ghost population’ contributing to one particular group. It is one big ghost that merged in with the African source population for all modern humans.” Journal Nature on March 18, 2025.
According to this study, a portion of our ancestors belonged to an unknown population, referred to as Population B. This group contributed 20% of our DNA and may have enhanced human brain function approximately 300,000 years ago.
