Ninmah / Ninhursag had multiple names or epithets, each commemorating her achievements and actions. Among her different names, Ninmah meant “Great Queen.” Nintu meant Lady of Birth, and Mamma or Mami meant mother. Aruru, Belet-Ili, meant Lady of the Gods, and Ninti referred to Lady of the Ribs. Her name was changed from Ninmah to Ninhursag to commemorate the creation of humanity by her son Ninurta. The sources of the hymn identify her as Ninhursag or “lady of the holy mountain.” It refers to the site of her temple, the E-Kur in Eridu. She was the mother goddess. Within her multiple epithets, the following stand out: ‘mother goddess,’ ‘midwife of the gods,’ ‘mother of all children, ‘ and ‘mother of the gods.’ She is identified as the “true and great lady of heaven.”
Ninmah / Ninhursag also wanted to be called “Mami,” the goddess of the womb. It is evident from the text that Ninmah’s name was used to identify her role as a gynecologist. The epithet Namma/Nammu, meaning mother of the gods, was related to her knowledge and role as a geneticist. Ninmah denotes her expertise as a gynecologist.
Enki and Ninmah / Ninhursag
Enki was prolific in sexual matters. The ancient documents recognize him as the Lord of semen and the divine lover of Ninmah / Ninhursag.
